Respect and Achieve

“Defy the odds, Set a new standard and STEP UP”

At Trailblazers we believe that with the right support and guidance any young person is capable of achieving. Our team is led by experienced staff who, over time, have successfully inspired a wide range of young people to implement positive changes and make a significant difference to their lives. We fully appreciate that no two people are the same and therefore tailor our support and training programmes to meet the overall developmental needs of the individual.

Our programme focuses heavily on Respect and we believe passionately that if we can comprehensively mentor young people in this way they will be able to successfully apply these principles to many situations in their day to day life.

In addition to our rolling daily programme we provide an intense outreach training package, available to both schools and colleges. We spend time with teachers and tutors prior to our input, thus giving us the opportunity to decide on the course content in a united manner, and ensure the training package meets the overall needs of the group.

We work tirelessly to build trust and maintain relationships across all levels. We believe strongly in leading by example and would wish to be recognised as an organisation whose passion and dedication enables us to successfully engage even the most troubled of young people.

“Decide, Commit and RESOLVE”

Young people who under achieve whilst at school often feel that they have little control over their lives. They can sometimes get caught in a downward spiral, unable to make the right choices that would send them in a direction that would make the future more positive.

Similarly those who are heading towards exclusion often feel the same way. For whatever reason, they have given up on the education system and feel it has nothing to offer them.

By concentrating on the key issues facing today’s young people, taking the time to listen to their views, and by valuing their opinion we are able to design sessions in such a way we can constructively convey positive messages in an alternative and personally appropriate manner.

Each young person is asked to agree challenges and targets directly linked to his or her personal pathway/development plan. These challenges will encourage those who participate to take ownership of their ongoing personal development.

Individuals achieve completion of the challenges by attending relevant sessions and collecting evidence to create a personal portfolio. At the end of each session they will complete a challenge sheet and have it signed by the tutor with comments. These challenge sheets will count as evidence towards their overall achievements.

“Enjoy and Achieve”

By completing the programme a young person will build a portfolio of work, some of which will be accredited using the AQA award scheme.

Awards are available in the following areas.

- Motor vehicle studies
- Health and Fitness
- Community project
- Food Hygiene and preparation
- Music
- Customer service skills
- Teamwork

“The power of Team”

We believe it is hugely beneficial for an individual to experience firsthand the positive impact and feeling of self worth that is generated by participating in a community project. An integral part of our programme is therefore devoted to seeking out an existing worthwhile cause, or developing ideas of this nature from within the classroom environment through to fruition.

Active participation in sport has also been widely proven to build positive self esteem and provide young people with a strong personal sense of achievement. Additionally it teaches them the importance of following instructions, working as a team, and ultimately leadership and responsibility. Some young people often have difficulties with communication and by working together to overcome sporting challenges they learn to listen to each other and eventually to make their own contribution. Being aware that they can make valuable suggestions once again promotes positive self worth and builds esteem.

Low self esteem is often coupled with feelings of being inadequate or incapable. Young people of this nature often feel that their actions or behaviour, whether good or bad, have no direct effect on what goes on around them. By showing them that they can succeed in sport, and by demonstrating commitment to improve their performance, they begin to realise that the skills they have learnt will be useful in other areas of their lives, and so they gradually get caught on an upward spiral and take steps to turn their lives around.

Should a young person show promise within an area of sport/activity we will provide a qualified coach if necessary and introduce them to an organised team/venue in order to encourage and develop these skills.

“Curriculum based learning”

We understand how damaging it can be to the development of a young person if a decision to exclude from school is taken. As a result we have a number of qualified teachers available to provide curriculum based learning in core subjects such as Maths, English and Science. With the addition of mentorship and support from a Trailblazers learning coach we aim to provide young people with the opportunity to maintain and develop their existing learning in line with their peers.
